YouTube: The Search Engine Wearing a Telly Costume

Categorise YouTube as "social media" and you'll use it wrong. With some 2.5 billion logged-in users, it functions as the world's second search engine and, increasingly, its favourite television — now watched more on living-room TVs than on phones in many markets.
Why that distinction changes your strategy
- Feeds forget; search remembers. An Instagram post dies in days. A YouTube video answering "how to bleed a radiator" gets found continuously for years — evergreen enquiry generation, not content treadmill.
- Intent is high. People arrive with questions — the classic "how to / what is / which should I" — which is precisely the expertise your business holds.
- Google feeds from it: videos appear in ordinary search results and get cited by AI answers, doubling your findability.
- Shorts now feed the machine, pulling tens of billions of daily views and funnelling viewers to your longer answers and channel.
The small-business play
Forget subscriber counts and going viral. List the twenty questions customers actually ask you; answer each in a plainly titled two-to-five-minute video ("How much does X cost in the UK?"). Titles that match real searches, steady accumulation, no dancing. It's SEO you can do with your face.
