SEO — search engine optimisation — suffers from two decades of snake-oil salesmen. So let's ignore the industry and look at the numbers that explain why the boring version of SEO keeps paying.

Four statistics worth knowing

  • Organic search drives roughly half of all website traffic across industries, according to long-running BrightEdge research — more than social media and paid advertising combined.
  • The first organic result takes around a quarter or more of all clicks, and click-through falls off a cliff with each position below (Backlinko's large-scale studies). Page two is, famously, where results go to be ignored.
  • Search leads close. Someone typing "emergency plumber Aylesbury" has a need right now — which is why inbound search leads convert at several times the rate of cold outreach in study after study.
  • It compounds. A page that ranks keeps producing enquiries for years at no extra cost — the opposite of advertising, which stops the moment the spend does.

What "doing SEO" actually means for a small firm

Not tricks. Three things: a fast, clear website that says what you do and where; pages that genuinely answer the questions customers type; and a steady trickle of reviews and mentions from other reputable sites. That's it. Everything else is refinement.
