Three Billion Users Later: How Instagram Actually Ranks Content in 2026

20 January 2026
Instagram enters 2026 with around three billion monthly users and, unusually, a habit of explaining itself: chief Adam Mosseri now regularly publishes how ranking works. Here's the current picture, decoded for businesses.
The signals that matter most
- Watch time first. For Reels especially: do people stop, and stay? The opening two seconds decide most outcomes.
- Sends per reach — how often viewers share your post by DM — is the signal Mosseri names repeatedly. Instagram wants content people pass to friends.
- Likes and comments still count, weighted differently for followers versus strangers; connected reach and discovery reach are ranked by separate systems.
- Originality is enforced: reposted and watermarked material is demoted; original creators get surfaced in recommendations.
What no longer matters much
Follower counts (small accounts routinely outreach big ones per post), posting time (minor), hashtag volume (near-irrelevant now — a couple of descriptive ones suffice), and every "hack" sold in a webinar.
The strategy that falls out
Make things a real person would send to a real friend: genuinely useful, genuinely local, or genuinely funny. Hook in two seconds, caption for the sound-off majority, and post when you have something — not because it's Tuesday.
