The Second-Hand Camera Market: Professional Kit at Hobbyist Prices

Here's a happy consequence of the camera industry's creator gold rush: as enthusiasts chase each new video-first model, the second-hand market has filled with recent, excellent equipment at half its original price. For a business that needs results rather than bragging rights, used is the intelligent buy of 2026.

Why used works so well now

  • Cameras plateaued for business purposes years ago. A five-year-old mirrorless body shoots 4K with face-tracking autofocus — everything a talking head or product shot requires.
  • Reputable dealers (MPB, Wex used, London Camera Exchange and similar) grade honestly and warranty for months — this isn't a car-boot gamble.
  • Lenses barely depreciate in usefulness: a used bright prime for £150–£250 delivers the blurred-background "professional look" that transforms self-shot video.
  • Meanwhile the fashion economy runs the other way — TikTok-driven demand has inflated certain compacts — so buy on capability, not trend.

A sensible used setup, ~£500–£700

A recent-generation APS-C mirrorless body with flip screen (Sony, Canon or Fujifilm), a used bright prime lens, spare battery, and the £150 audio/tripod kit we're forever prescribing. That's a rig producing client-impressing content for less than many firms spend on a single ad campaign — with most of its value intact if you resell.
