The Review Reply: Marketing's Highest-Return Five Minutes

BrightLocal's long-running consumer surveys keep returning the same findings: the overwhelming majority of people read reviews when choosing a local business, most pay attention to whether the business responds, and a large share say a thoughtful reply makes them more likely to use the firm. Yet drive through any town's Google listings and you'll find replies rarer than five-star ratings.

Why replies out-punch their effort

You're not writing to the reviewer. You're writing to the hundreds of silent prospects who'll read the exchange for years. Every reply is a free advert for how you treat people.

The craft, briefly

  • Positive reviews: thank them by name, mention the specific job ("glad the boiler's behaving!") — specificity proves it's not copy-paste — and welcome them back.
  • Negative reviews: reply fast, stay gracious, state your side factually without relitigating, and move detail offline ("call me directly and I'll sort it"). Readers score the composure, not the verdict. Never argue; one defensive reply undoes fifty stars.
  • Fake or unfair? Reply calmly for the audience, then use the platform's reporting process.

Ten minutes on a Friday, every review answered, forever. Among everything on your marketing list, almost nothing else is this cheap, this visible and this ignored by competitors.
