The Front Camera Grew Up: Why the iPhone 17's Selfie Sensor Is a Business Tool

The least glamorous camera on the new iPhones is the most interesting. Every iPhone 17 model carries a new 18-megapixel front camera built on a square sensor — and that odd shape solves two problems that have plagued self-shot business video forever.

Problem one: portrait or landscape?

Hold the phone comfortably upright, and you can still record landscape video — the square sensor simply crops the other way. One take now yields both the vertical version for Reels and the horizontal version for YouTube and your website. The eternal "which way do I film?" dilemma quietly dies.

Problem two: drifting out of frame

Center Stage framing follows you: step around your workshop mid-demo, and the shot adjusts, widening automatically if a colleague joins. It's the camera operator you didn't hire.

Plus one genuinely new trick

Dual Capture records front and back cameras simultaneously — your face reacting in a corner while the main camera shows the job. Site tours, unboxings and demonstrations get the "presenter picture-in-picture" style that previously demanded editing skills.

Phone makers have finally accepted what the data has said for years: the front camera isn't for selfies. It's a broadcast studio for one, and it just became dramatically harder to use badly.
