Rent or Buy? Why SEO Compounds While Advertising Evaporates

Advertising and SEO answer the same question — "how do people find us?" — with opposite economics. Understanding the difference is worth more than any tactic.
The economics, side by side
- Ads are rent. Traffic arrives instantly, and stops the second the spend does. Costs per click trend upward over time as auctions crowd.
- SEO is buying. A page that ranks for "wedding florist Buckinghamshire" delivers enquiries every month for years, at a marginal cost approaching zero. The work is front-loaded; the returns compound.
- Search leads close better — inbound enquiries convert at multiples of cold outreach in long-running industry studies, because the customer arrived already needing you.
- Even in the AI-answers era, the same assets win: pages that clearly answer real questions are what both Google's results and AI engines cite.
So never advertise?
No — use each for what it's shaped for. Ads: launches, offers, testing which messages convert, and covering the months while organic grows. SEO: the permanent enquiry engine underneath. The failure mode we see constantly is a business renting attention for a decade — spending yearly what a solid website and content foundation would have cost once.
Rent when you must. Build what you can. The compounding does the rest.
