Pixel 10: The Phone That Teaches You Photography as You Shoot

Google's Pixel 10 phones arrived last week, and beneath the usual spec bumps sit two features with real small-business relevance. Camera Coach uses Google's Gemini AI to look at what you're framing and suggest, in plain words, how to improve the shot — angle, light, composition — before you take it. And Pro Res Zoom pushes zoom to 100x, using AI to reconstruct detail that the tiny lens can't optically capture.

The genuinely useful bit

Most business owners' product and premises photos fail on basics: shooting into light, cluttered backgrounds, timid framing. A patient teacher living inside the camera app — one that never sighs — will measurably raise the floor of everyday marketing photography. This is AI as tutor rather than fabricator, and it's the most defensible use of the technology we've seen in a camera.

The bit to treat carefully

Extreme AI zoom invents plausible detail. Fine for a distant sign; inappropriate for anything evidential — condition reports, insurance photos, before-and-afters — where "the AI guessed" is not a phrase you want in a dispute. Know which photos are marketing and which are records, and zoom with your feet for the latter.

Every phone maker will copy both features within a year. The coaching, at least, deserves copying.
