Phone or "Proper Camera"? The Decision Guide for 2026

The most common kit question we're asked, answered without brand loyalty or nostalgia.

The phone wins when…

  • Speed to publish matters. Shoot, edit, caption, post — one device, five minutes. For social-first marketing this workflow advantage beats image quality almost every time.
  • It's with you. The spontaneous moment — the finished job, the delivery, the team laugh — belongs to whatever's in your pocket.
  • Computation helps: modern phones quietly fix exposure, steady your hand, and now coach your framing. The floor is remarkably high.

The camera wins when…

  • Light is bad and stakes are high: larger sensors keep evening events and dim interiors clean where phones smear.
  • You want the "professional look": genuinely blurred backgrounds and lens character still separate a headshot from a snapshot.
  • Long sessions: a day's filming or five hundred product shots calls for real batteries, real ergonomics, real zoom.
  • Distinctiveness matters: in feeds full of identical phone footage, camera-shot content simply looks different.

Our standing recommendation

Phone plus £150 of audio and support kit first; a camera only when a specific limitation costs you results — and you can name it. Kit purchased to postpone pressing record is the most expensive equipment there is.
