Instagram spent 2024 quietly rewiring itself, and boss Adam Mosseri spent it explaining the changes in his video updates. As the year closes, here's the digest for busy business owners.

The changes that matter

  • "Views" became the ruling metric across Reels, photos, Stories — one currency for everything. Reach, not follower count, is the scoreboard.
  • Sends are gold. Mosseri has said it plainly: content people share by DM gets shown to more people. Make things worth sending to a friend.
  • Small accounts got a fairer shot. Ranking now gives original content from smaller accounts more chance to reach non-followers — and reposting others' material got demoted.
  • Trial Reels arrived in December: you can now test a Reel on non-followers only, see how it performs, then decide whether to publish properly. A free focus group.

What it adds up to

Instagram no longer rewards showing up; it rewards being worth showing. For a small business that means fewer, better posts: genuinely useful or genuinely local beats frequent and forgettable. Follower counts matter less than they ever have — which, if your following is small, is the best news of the year.
