Google's AI Mode: Search Becomes a Conversation

11 June 2025
At its I/O conference, Google launched AI Mode in the United States: a full chat-style search experience, sitting alongside classic results. Ask a long, messy, multi-part question; get a synthesised answer with cited sources; ask a follow-up and it remembers the context.
Under the bonnet it uses a technique Google calls "query fan-out" — your one question is split into many sub-searches, run in parallel, and stitched into a single response.
The uncomfortable implication
Every marketer has spent two decades optimising for a world where a search produces a list of links and a click. AI Mode produces an answer. Google's own early data shows sessions running significantly longer than traditional search — people are exploring within Google rather than leaving it.
Fewer clicks will leave the results page. The clicks that do leave will be from people much further along in their decision — better-informed, closer to buying, and more valuable.
How to prepare before it reaches the UK
- Answer real questions on your site, in clear prose a machine can quote — not marketing fog.
- Strengthen your brand searches. People who search for you by name still click through. Being known beats being ranked.
- Track visibility, not just visits. Being cited in an AI answer is a win your analytics won't show you yet.
This is the biggest change to search since the smartphone. It's crossing the Atlantic; the only question is when.
