Facebook in 2026: Not Dead. Different.

Every year someone declares Facebook dead; every year it reports numbers north of three billion monthly users — the largest platform on earth, and in the UK still the most-used social network across the population. What's actually died is the version in your memory. Understanding what replaced it is where the opportunity sits.

What Facebook is now

  • The village noticeboard. Local groups — town chat, buy-and-sell, trade recommendations — are where "can anyone recommend a plumber?" gets asked thousands of times a day. Being helpfully present there outperforms any page strategy.
  • Marketplace, an economy of its own, and a legitimate shopfront for local retail.
  • The 35+ platform. Younger users have largely gone; the people with mortgages, gardens and buying authority have not.
  • Video-first in the feed: Reels and video now dominate what the algorithm shows — your vertical videos work here too.

The honest playbook

Organic page reach remains dismal — the noticeboard model wins instead: a complete, review-rich page as your credibility anchor; genuine helpfulness in local groups (as yourself, sparingly, never spammily); Marketplace where relevant; and modest boosted posts for local reach when it matters. Facebook stopped being cool years ago. Cool was never what paid the invoices.
