Enter the Awards: The Marketing Tactic Hiding in Plain Sight

Business awards get sneered at — "you just pay to enter" — usually by people who've never entered. Treated correctly, they're one of the highest-leverage PR moves available to a small firm.
What an award actually buys
- Third-party proof. "Award-winning" is a claim someone else made about you. In a low-trust marketplace, borrowed judgement is priceless — it goes on the website, the van, the email footer, the tender document.
- A news story. Local and trade press reliably cover shortlists and wins — coverage you couldn't buy, that ranks in search and gets cited by AI answer engines describing your firm.
- A content calendar: entering, shortlisted, the ceremony, the win (or gracious loss) — months of legitimate posts.
- Internal gold. Teams remember award nights. Recruitment pages mention them. Morale is marketing too.
How to do it without wasting money
Prefer established local, chamber, and trade-body awards over pay-to-win vanity schemes (a quick search reveals which is which). Read past winners; enter categories where your evidence is strongest. And treat the entry form as marketing copy — specific numbers, customer outcomes, a story — because that's exactly what it is. Even the writing process forces a firm to articulate why it's good. Many discover they'd never actually done that.
