Copilot's Agent Store: AI Colleagues Go Mainstream

Microsoft has launched an Agent Store inside Copilot Studio, letting organisations install, share and publish ready-made AI agents — pre-built digital workers for tasks like inbox triage, report drafting, HR queries and sales admin. It follows a steady drumbeat since Ignite in November: agents in Word, Excel and PowerPoint, an "Agent 365" control panel for managing them, and Copilot itself now running on the latest frontier models.

The significance for ordinary businesses

Until recently, getting an AI agent meant building one — a developer job. An app store model changes that to a browsing job. The same shift that put accounting software and CRMs within reach of five-person firms is now happening to automation.

It also means your staff can adopt agents without telling you, which is the part deserving management attention.

Sensible questions before installing anything

  • What data can it see? An agent with access to all company files is a governance decision, not an IT setting.
  • Where's the checkpoint? Agents that draft for human approval are low-risk. Agents that send, delete or purchase need a leash.
  • Who owns the result? Every agent's output should have a human name accountable for it. Still. Always.

The AI colleague has left the keynote stage and entered the office. Hire carefully.
