Here's an unfashionable marketing secret as the year turns: the firms that grow rarely have the cleverest campaigns. They have the most consistent ones.

What the research shows

  • Consistent brand presentation is associated with revenue increases of up to a fifth or more, according to Marq's long-running brand-consistency surveys of hundreds of organisations.
  • A signature colour can lift brand recognition by as much as 80% — a widely cited finding from university colour research. Think how few pixels of a certain purple chocolate wrapper you need to see.
  • Familiarity breeds trust, literally: psychology's "mere exposure effect" shows people prefer things simply because they've seen them repeatedly. Recognition is a persuasion strategy.
  • Marketing scientists estimate a majority of buyers in your market aren't buying right now — consistency is how you're remembered when their moment comes.

The January project

One page: your exact colours (with codes), fonts, logo files, photo style, and three phrases you always use. Then apply it everywhere — invoices, van, email footer, social templates — and resist the itch to redesign in March. Boring to you is recognisable to them. You get tired of your brand years before your customers even notice it. That's the job.
