AI Mode Lands in the UK — Here's What Changes for Your Website

It's here. On 28 July, Google switched on AI Mode for UK users, following its US and India launches. You'll see it as a new tab in Search and a button in the Google app — a conversational search that answers complex questions directly, citing sources along the way.

What we know from the US rollout

  • Sessions in AI Mode run notably longer than traditional searches — people ask follow-ups instead of clicking away.
  • A large share of AI-answered queries end without a click to any website.
  • AI Mode traffic doesn't currently appear separately in Search Console or Analytics, so its effects arrive as an unexplained shift in your numbers.

Keep calm and check three things

1. Are you quotable? AI Mode cites sources — typically a dozen per answer. Pages that state facts plainly ("we serve X, we charge from Y, here's how Z works") get cited. Pages of adjectives don't.

2. Does your visibility survive without the click? Informational traffic will thin. Business comes increasingly from being mentioned and remembered — in AI answers, reviews, directories and press — so people search for you by name.

3. Do you own any channels? Your email list, your customer database and yes, the letterbox, are unaffected by whatever Google does next. That's worth something.

SEO isn't dead. But "rank for keywords, collect clicks" is becoming "be the trusted answer" — and that's a different game.
